1Figliuoli di Giuda: Phares Hesron, e Charmi, e Hur, e Sobai.

2E Rahaia figliuolo di Sobal generò Jahath, il quale fu padre di Ahumai, e di Laad. Da questi le famiglie de' Sarathiti.

3Questa pure è la stirpe di Etam: Jezrael, e Jesema, e Jedebos: i quali ebbero una sorella per nome Asalelphuni.

4Phanuel fu padre di Gedor, ed Ezer padre di Hosa. Questi sono i discendenti di Hur primogenito di Ephrata padre di Bettilehem.

5Assur padre di Thecua ebbe due mogli, Halaa, e Naara.

6E Naara gli partorì Oozam, ed Hepher, e Themani, ed Ahasthari: questi sono figliuoli di Naara.

7Figliuoli di Halaa: Sereth, Isaar, ed Ethnan.

8E Cos generò Anob, e Soboba, donde la famiglia di Aharehel figliuolo di Arum.

9Ma Jabes fu il più illustre tra' suoi fratelli, e la madre sua gli pose nome Jabes, dicendo: L'ho partorito con dolore.

10Or Jabes invocò il Dio d'Israele, e disse: Se tu mi benedirai distintamente, e dilaterai i miei confini, e se sarà meco la tua mano, e non permetterai, ch'io venga oppresso dalla malvagità. E Dio gli concedette quello, ch'ei domandò.

11Or Caleb fratello di sua generò Mahir, il quale fu padre di Esthon.

12Esthon genero Bethrapha, e Phesse, e Tehinna principe della città di Naas. Questi sono, che abitarono Recha.

13Figliuoli di Cenez: Othoniel, e Saraia. Figliuoli di Othoniel: Hathath, e Maonathi.

14Maonathi generò Ophra; e Saraia generò Joab principe della Valle degli artefici: perocché ivi abitavano gli artefici.

15Figliuoli di Caleb figliuolo di Jephone: Hir, ed Eia, e Naham. figliuolo di Eia, Cenez.

16Figliuoli di Jaleleel: Ziph, e Zipha, Thiria, e Asrael.

17Figliuoli di Ezra: Jether, e Mered, ed Epher, e Jalon; ed egli generò Maria, e Sammai, e Jesba padre di Esthamo.

18Moglie di lui fu anche Judaia, la quale partorì Jared padre di Gedor, ed Heber padre di Socho, e Icuthiel padre di Zanoe. E questi sono i figliuoli di Bethia figliuola di Pharaone, sposata da Mered.

19E i figliuoli di (sua) moglie Odaia sorella di Naham, padre di Ceila sono Garmi, ed Esthamo, il quale fu di Machati.

20Figliuoli di Simon: Amnon, e Rinna figliuolo di Hanan, e Thilon. E i figliuoli di Jesi sono Zoheth, e Benzoheth.

21Figliuoli di Sela figliuolo di Giuda: Her padre di Lecha, e Laada padre di Maresa, e le casate di quelli, che lavorano il bisso nella casa del giuramento,

22E colui, che arrestò il sole, e gli uomini della Menzogna, e il Franco, e l'Ardente, i quali furon principi in Moab, e poi tornarono a Lahem. La storia è antica.

23Questi sono quelli, che fanno i vasi di terra, che abitano alle Piante, e alle Siepi nelle case del re, lavorando per lui; e ivi abitarono.

24Figliuoli di Simeon: Namuel, e Jamin, Jarib, Zara, e Saul:

25Di cui fu figliuolo Sellum, il quale fu padre di Mapsam, e questi fu padre di Masma.

26Figliuolo di Masma fu Hamuel, di cui fu figliuolo Zachur, da cui nacque Semei:

27Semei ebbe sedici figliuoli, e sei figlie; mai suoi fratelli non ebbero molti figliuoli, e tutta la loro discendenza non potè agguagliare il numero de' figliuoli di Giuda.

28Eglino si stanziarono in Bersabee, e in Molada, e in Hasarsuhal,

29E in Baia, e in Asom, e in Tholad,

30E in Bathuel, e in Horma, e in Siceleg,

31E in Bethmarchaboth, e in Hasarsusim, e in Bethberai, e in Saarim. Queste furono le loro città fino al tempo del re Davidde.

32E i loro villaggi: Etam, e Aen, Remmon, e Thochen, e Asan, numero cinque.

33E insieme tutti i villaggi che sono attorno alle dette città sino a Baal. In questi luoghi essi abitano, e ivi sono distribuite le loro sedi.

34Mosobab, e Jemlech, e Josa figliuolo di Amasia,

35E Joel, e Jehu figliuolo di Josabia, il quale fu figliuolo di Saraia figliuolo di Asiel,

36Ed Elioenai, e Jacoba, e Isuhaia, e Asaia, e Adiel, e Ismiel, e Banaia,

37E Ziza figliuolo di Sephei, figliuolo di Allori, figliuolo di Idaia, figliuolo di Semri, figliuolo di Samaia.

38Questi sono i capi illustri delle famiglie, e delle casate di Simeon, e si moltiplicò grandemente la loro schiatta.

39Ed eglino s'inoltrarono per occupare Gador sino alla parte orientale della valle, cercando pascolo pe' loro greggi.

40E trovaron pasture abbondanti, e molto buone, e un paese molto ampio, e tranquillo, e ferace, nel quale avea prima abitato la stirpe di Cham.

41Quegli adunque, che sopra abbiam descritti pei loro nomi, andarono a tempo di Ezechia re di Giuda: e gettarono a terra le tende, e gli abitanti, che vi trovarono, e gli annichilarono, come sono fino al presente: e vi abitarono in luogo di quelli, perchè vi trovarono grassissimi pascoli.

42Andarono parimente altri de' figliuoli di Simeon al monte Seir in numero di cinquecento uomini, avendo per loro condottieri Phalthia, e Naaria, e Raphaia, e Oziel figliuoli di Jesi:

43E distrussero gli avanzi degli Amaleciti, che avean potuto salvarsi, e ivi abitarono in luogo di essi, e vi sono fino al dì d'oggi.

5Assur vero patri Thecuæ erant duæ uxores, Halaa et Naara.

6Peperit autem ei Naara, Oozam, et Hepher, et Themani, et Ahasthari: isti sunt filii Naara.

7Porro filii Halaa, Sereth, Isaar et Ethnan.

8Cos autem genuit Anob, et Soboba, et cognationem Aharehel filii Arum.

9Fuit autem Jabes inclytus præ fratribus suis, et mater ejus vocavit nomen illius Jabes, dicens: Quia peperi eum in dolore.

10Invocavit vero Jabes Deum Israël, dicens: Si benedicens benedixeris mihi, et dilataveris terminos meos, et fuerit manus tua mecum, et feceris me a malitia non opprimi. Et præstitit Deus quæ precatus est.

11Caleb autem frater Sua genuit Mahir, qui fuit pater Esthon.

12Porro Esthon genuit Bethrapha, et Phesse, et Tehinna patrem urbis Naas: hi sunt viri Recha.

13Filii autem Cenez, Othoniel, et Saraia. Porro filii Othoniel, Hathath, et Maonathi.

14Maonathi genuit Ophra, Saraia autem genuit Joab patrem Vallis artificum: ibi quippe artifices erant.

15Filii vero Caleb filii Jephone, Hir, et Ela, et Naham. Filii quoque Ela: Cenez.

16Filii quoque Jaleleel: Ziph, et Zipha, Thiria, et Asraël.

17Et filii Ezra, Jether, et Mered, et Epher, et Jalon, genuitque Mariam, et Sammai, et Jesba patrem Esthamo.

18Uxor quoque ejus Judaia, peperit Jared patrem Gedor, et Heber patrem Socho, et Icuthiel patrem Zanoë: hi autem filii Bethiæ filiæ Pharaonis, quam accepit Mered.

19Et filii uxoris Odaiæ sororis Naham patris Ceila, Garmi, et Esthamo, qui fuit de Machathi.

20Filii quoque Simon, Amnon, et Rinna filius Hanan, et Thilon. Et filii Jesi, Zoheth, et Benzoheth.

21Filii Sela, filii Juda: Her pater Lecha, et Laada pater Maresa, et cognationes domus operantium byssum in domo juramenti.

22Et qui stare fecit solem, virique Mendacii, et Securus, et Incendens, qui principes fuerunt in Moab, et qui reversi sunt in Lahem: hæc autem verba vetera.

23Hi sunt figuli habitantes in plantationibus et in sepibus, apud regem in operibus ejus: commoratique sunt ibi.

24Filii Simeon: Namuel et Jamin, Jarib, Zara, Saul.

25Sellum filius ejus, Mapsam filius ejus, Masma filius ejus.

26Filii Masma: Hamuel filius ejus, Zachur filius ejus, Semei filius ejus.

27Filii Semei sedecim, et filiæ sex: fratres autem ejus non habuerunt filios multos, et universa cognatio non potuit adæquare summam filiorum Juda.

28Habitaverunt autem in Bersabee, et Molada, et Hasarsuhal,

29et in Bala, et in Asom, et in Tholad,

30et in Bathuel, et in Horma, et in Siceleg,

31et in Bethmarchaboth, et in Hasarsusim, et in Bethberai, et in Saarim: hæ civitates eorum usque ad regem David.

32Villæ quoque eorum: Etam, et Aën, Remmon, et Thochen, et Asan, civitates quinque.

33Et universi viculi eorum per circuitum civitatum istarum usque ad Baal: hæc est habitatio eorum, et sedium distributio.

34Mosobab quoque et Jemlech, et Josa filius Amasiæ,

35et Joël, et Jehu filius Josabiæ filii Saraiæ filii Asiel,

36et Elioënai, et Jacoba, et Isuhaia, et Asaia, et Adiel, et Ismiel, et Banaia,

37Ziza quoque filius Sephei filii Allon filii Idaia filii Semri filii Samaia.

38Isti sunt nominati principes in cognationibus suis, et in domo affinitatum suarum multiplicati sunt vehementer.

39Et profecti sunt ut ingrederentur in Gador usque ad orientem vallis, et ut quærerent pascua gregibus suis.

40Inveneruntque pascuas uberes, et valde bonas, et terram latissimam et quietam et fertilem, in qua ante habitaverant de stirpe Cham.

41Hi ergo venerunt, quos supra descripsimus nominatim, in diebus Ezechiæ regis Juda: et percusserunt tabernacula eorum, et habitatores qui inventi fuerant ibi, et deleverunt eos usque in præsentem diem: habitaveruntque pro eis, quoniam uberrimas pascuas ibidem repererunt.

42De filiis quoque Simeon abierunt in montem Seir viri quingenti, habentes principes Phalthiam et Naariam et Raphaiam et Oziel filios Jesi:

43et percusserunt reliquias, quæ evadere potuerant, Amalecitarum, et habitaverunt ibi pro eis usque ad diem hanc.

2And Raia the son of Sobal beget Jahath, of whom were born Ahumai, and Laad. These are the families of Sarathi.

3And this is the posterity of Etam: Jezrahel, and Jesema, and Jedebos: and the name of their sister was Asalelphuni.

4And Phanuel the father of Gedor, and Ezar the father of Hosa, these are the sons of Hur the firstborn of Ephratha the father of Bethlehem.

5And Assur the father of Thecua had two wives, Halaa and Naara:

6And Naara bore him Ozam, and Hepher, and Themani, and Ahasthari: these are the sons of Naara.

7And the sons of Halaa, Sereth, Isaar, and Ethnan.

8And Cos begot Anob, and Soboba, the kindred of Aharehel the son of Arum.

9And Jabes was more honourable than any of his brethren, and his mother called his name Jabes, saying: Because I bore him with sorrow.

10And Jabes called upon the God of Israel, saying: If blessing thou wilt bless me, and wilt enlarge my borders, and thy hand be with me, and thou save me from being oppressed by evil. And God granted him the things he prayed for.

11And Caleb the brother of Sua beget Mahir, who was the father of Esthon.

12And Esthon beget Bethrapha, and Phesse, and Tehinna father of the city of Naas: these are the men of Recha.

13And the sons of Cenez were Othoniel, and Saraia. And the sons of Othoniel, Hathath, and Maonathi.

14Maonathi beget Ophra, and Saraia begot Joab the father of the Valley of artificers: for artificers were there.

15And the sons of Caleb the son of Jephone, were Hir, and Ela, and Naham. And the sons of Ela: Cenez.

16The sons also of Jaleleel: Ziph, and Zipha, Thiria, and Asrael.

17And the sons of Esra, Jether, and Mered, and Epher, and Jalon, and he beget Mariam, and Sammai, and Jesba the father of Esthamo.

18And his wife Judaia, bore Jared the father of Gedor, and Heber the father of Socho, and Icuthiel the father of Zanoe. And these are the sons of Bethia the daughter of Pharao, whom Mered took to wife.

19And the sons of his wife Odaia the sister of Naham the father of Celia, Garmi, and Esthamo, who was of Machathi.

20The sons also of Simon, Amnon, and Rinna the son of Hanan, and Thilon. And the sons of Jesi Zoheth, and Benzoheth.

21The sons of Sela the son of Juda: Her the father of Lecha, and Laada the father of Maresa, and the families of the house of them that wrought fine linen in the House of oath.

22And he that made the sun to stand, and the men of Lying, and Secure, and Burning, who were princes in Moab, and who returned into Lahem. Now these are things of old.

23These are the potters, and they dwelt in Plantations, and Hedges, with the king for his works, and they abode there.

24The sons of Simeon: Namuel, and Jamin, Jarib, Zara, Saul:

25Sellum his son, Mapsam his son, Masma his son.

26The sons of Masma: Hamuel his son, Zachur his son, Semei his son.

27The sons of Semei were sixteen, and six daughters: but his brethren had not many sons, and the whole kindred could not reach to the sum of the children of Juda.

28And they dwelt in Bersabee, and Molada, and Hasarsuhal,

29And in Bala, and in Asom, and in Tholad,

30And in Bathuel, and in Horma, and in Siceleg,

31And in Bethmarchaboth, and in Hasarsusim, and in Bethberai, and in Saarim. These were their cities unto the reign of David.

32Their towns also were Etam, and Aen, Remmon, and Thochen, and Asan, five cities.

33And all their villages round about these cities as far as Baal. This was their habitation, and the distribution of their dwellings.

34And Mosabab and Jemlech, and Josa, the son of Amasias,

35And Joel, and Jehu the son of Josabia the son of Saraia, the son of Asiel,

36And Elioenai, and Jacoba, and Isuhaia, and Asaia, and Adiel, and Ismiel, and Banaia,

37Ziza also the son of Sephei the son of Allon the son of Idaia the son of Semri the son of Samaia.

38These were named princes in their kindreds, and in the houses of their families were multiplied exceedingly.

39And they went forth to enter into Gador as far as to the east side of the valley, to seek pastures for their flocks.

40And they found fat pastures, and very good, and a country spacious, and quiet, and fruitful, in which some of the race of Cham had dwelt before.

41And these whose names are written above, came in the days of Ezechias king of Juda: and they beat down their tents, and slew the inhabitants that were found there, and utterly destroyed them unto this day: and they dwelt in their place, because they found there fat pastures.

42Some also of the children of Simeon, five hundred men, went into mount Seir, having for their captains Phaltias and Naaria and Raphaia and Oziel the sons of Jesi:

43And they slew the remnant of the Amalecites, who had been able to escape, and they dwelt there in their stead unto this day.
