1 Corinthiens 13

1Quand je parlerais les langues des hommes et des anges, si je n’ai pas la charité, je suis un airain qui résonne ou une cymbale qui retentit.

2Quand j’aurais le don de prophétie, que je connaîtrais tous les mystères, et que je posséderais toute science ; quand j’aurais même toute la foi, jusqu’à transporter des montagnes, si je n’ai pas la charité, je ne suis rien.

3Quand je distribuerais tous mes biens pour la nourriture des pauvres, quand je livrerais mon corps aux flammes, si je n’ai pas la charité, tout cela ne me sert de rien.

4La charité est patiente, elle est bonne ; la charité n’est pas envieuse, la charité n’est point inconsidérée, elle ne s’enfle point d’orgueil ;

5elle ne fait rien d’inconvenant, elle ne cherche point son intérêt, elle ne s’irrite point, elle ne tient pas compte du mal ;

6elle ne prend pas plaisir à l’injustice, mais elle se réjouit de la vérité ;

7elle excuse tout, elle croit tout, elle espère tout, elle supporte tout.

8La charité ne passera jamais. S’agit-il des prophéties, elles prendront fin ; des langues, elles cesseront ; de la science, elle aura son terme.

9Car nous ne connaissons qu’en partie, et nous ne prophétisons qu’en partie ;

10or, quand sera venu ce qui est parfait, ce qui est partiel prendra fin.

11Lorsque j’étais enfant, je parlais comme un enfant, je pensais comme un enfant, je raisonnais comme un enfant ; lorsque je suis devenu homme, j’ai laissé là ce qui était de l’enfant.

12Maintenant nous voyons dans un miroir, d’une manière obscure, mais alors nous verrons face à face ; aujourd’hui je connais en partie, mais alors je connaîtrai comme je suis connu.

13Maintenant ces trois choses demeurent : la foi, l’espérance, la charité ; mais la plus grande des trois c’est la charité.

1Si linguis hominum loquar, et angelorum, caritatem autem non habeam, factus sum velut æs sonans, aut cymbalum tinniens.

2Et si habuero prophetiam, et noverim mysteria omnia, et omnem scientiam: et si habuero omnem fidem ita ut montes transferam, caritatem autem non habuero, nihil sum.

3Et si distribuero in cibos pauperum omnes facultates meas, et si tradidero corpus meum ita ut ardeam, caritatem autem non habuero, nihil mihi prodest.

4Caritas patiens est, benigna est. Caritas non æmulatur, non agit perperam, non inflatur,

5non est ambitiosa, non quærit quæ sua sunt, non irritatur, non cogitat malum,

6non gaudet super iniquitate, congaudet autem veritati:

7omnia suffert, omnia credit, omnia sperat, omnia sustinet.

8Caritas numquam excidit: sive prophetiæ evacuabuntur, sive linguæ cessabunt, sive scientia destruetur.

9Ex parte enim cognoscimus, et ex parte prophetamus.

10Cum autem venerit quod perfectum est, evacuabitur quod ex parte est.

11Cum essem parvulus, loquebar ut parvulus, sapiebam ut parvulus, cogitabam ut parvulus. Quando autem factus sum vir, evacuavi quæ erant parvuli.

12Videmus nunc per speculum in ænigmate: tunc autem facie ad faciem. Nunc cognosco ex parte: tunc autem cognoscam sicut et cognitus sum.

13Nunc autem manent fides, spes, caritas, tria hæc: major autem horum est caritas.

1If I speak with the tongues of men, and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

2And if I should have prophecy and should know all mysteries, and all knowledge, and if I should have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

3And if I should distribute all my goods to feed the poor, and if I should deliver my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

4Charity is patient, is kind: charity envieth not, dealeth not perversely; is not puffed up;

5Is not ambitious, seeketh not her own, is not provoked to anger, thinketh no evil;

6Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth with the truth;

7Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

8Charity never falleth away: whether prophecies shall be made void, or tongues shall cease, or knowledge shall be destroyed.

9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

10But when that which is perfect is come, that which is in part shall be done away.

11When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child. But, when I became a man, I put away the things of a child.

12We see now through a glass in a dark manner; but then face to face. Now I know I part; but then I shall know even as I am known.

13And now there remain faith, hope, and charity, these three: but the greatest of these is charity.
