Números 25

1Israel estava então em Setim, e o povo caiu em pecado com as filhas de Moab,

2as quais os convidaram para os seus sacrifícios. Eles comeram e adoraram os deuses delas.

3Israel consagrou-se a Beelfegor. Então, irado, o Senhor

4disse a Moisés: Toma todos os príncipes do povo, e pendura-os em forcas em face do sol, para que o meu furor se afaste de Israel.

5Moisés disse aos juízes de Israel: Cada um mate os seus vizinhos, que se consagraram a Beelfegor.

6Entretanto um dos filhos de Israel trouxe para junto de seus irmãos uma Madianita, sob os olhos de Moisés e de todo o povo, que choravam diante da porta do tabernáculo.

7Vendo isto, Fineias, filho de Eleázaro, filho do sacerdote Aarão, levantou-se do meio do povo e, tomando uma lança,

8entrou após o Israelita até à parte posterior da tenda e atravessou o ventre de ambos, do homem e da mulher. Então cessou a praga sobre os filhos de Israel.

9Foram mortos vinte e quatro mil homens com aquela praga.

10O Senhor disse a Moisés:

11Fineias, filho de Eleázaro, filho do sacerdote Aarão, afagou a minha ira dos filhos de Israel, porque foi animado do meu zelo contra eles; por isso, eu não extingui os filhos de Israel no furor do meu zelo.

12Por isso dize-lhe: Eu lhe dou a paz da minha aliança,

13que será tanto para ele como para sua descendência um pacto de perpétuo sacerdócio, porque foi zeloso pelo seu Deus e expiou a maldade dos filhos de Israel.

14O Israelita, que foi morto com a Madianita, chamava-se Zambri, filho de Salu, chefe de uma família da tribo de Simeão.

15A mulher Madianita, que foi morta juntamente, chamava-se Cozbi, filha de Sur, chefe de tribo, de uma das casas patriarcais dos Madianitas.

16O Senhor falou a Moisés, dizendo:

17Tratai os Madianitas como inimigos e matai-os,

18porque também eles vos trataram como inimigos, e vos enganaram artificiosamente por meio do ídolo de Fogor, e de Cozbi, sua irmã, filha dum chefe de Madian, que foi morta no dia da praga que sobreveio por causa do sacrilégio de Fogor.

1Morabatur autem eo tempore Israël in Settim, et fornicatus est populus cum filiabus Moab,

2quæ vocaverunt eos ad sacrificia sua. At ille comederunt et adoraverunt deos earum.

3Initiatusque est Israël Beelphegor: et iratus Dominus,

4ait ad Moysen: Tolle cunctos principes populi, et suspende eos contra solem in patibulis, ut avertatur furor meus ab Israël.

5Dixitque Moyses ad judices Israël: Occidat unusquisque proximos suos, qui initiati sunt Beelphegor.

6Et ecce unus de filiis Israël intravit coram fratribus suis ad scortum Madianitidem, vidente Moyse, et omni turba filiorum Israël, qui flebant ante fores tabernaculi.

7Quod cum vidisset Phinees filius Eleazari filii Aaron sacerdotis, surrexit de medio multitudinis, et arrepto pugione,

8ingressus est post virum Israëlitem in lupanar, et perfodit ambos simul, virum scilicet et mulierem in locis genitalibus. Cessavitque plaga a filiis Israël:

9et occisi sunt viginti quatuor millia hominum.

10Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen:

11Phinees filius Eleazari filii Aaron sacerdotis avertit iram meam a filiis Israël: quia zelo meo commotus est contra eos, ut non ipse delerem filios Israël in zelo meo.

12Idcirco loquere ad eum: Ecce do ei pacem fœderis mei,

13et erit tam ipsi quam semini ejus pactum sacerdotii sempiternum: quia zelatus est pro Deo suo, et expiavit scelus filiorum Israël.

14Erat autem nomen viri Israëlitæ, qui occisus est cum Madianitide, Zambri filius Salu, dux de cognatione et tribu Simeonis.

15Porro mulier Madianitis, quæ pariter interfecta est, vocabatur Cozbi filia Sur principis nobilissimi Madianitarum.

16Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens:

17Hostes vos sentiant Madianitæ, et percutite eos:

18quia et ipsi hostiliter egerunt contra vos, et decepere insidiis per idolum Phogor, et Cozbi filiam ducis Madian sororem suam, quæ percussa est in die plagæ pro sacrilegio Phogor.

1And Israel at that time abode in Settim, and the people committed fornication with the daughters of Moab,

2Who called them to their sacrifices. And they ate of them, and adored their gods.

3And Israel was initiated to Beelphegor: upon which the Lord being angry,

4Said to Moses: Take all the princes of the people, and hang them up on gibbets against the sun: that my fury may be turned away from Israel.

5And Moses said to the judges of Israel: Let every man kill his neighbours, that have been initiated to Beelphegor.

6And behold one of the children of Israel went in before his brethren to a harlot of Madian, in the sight of Moses, and of all the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle.

7And when Phinees the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest saw it, he rose up from the midst; of the multitude, and taking a dagger,

8Went in after the Israelite into the brothel house, and thrust both of them through together, to wit, the man and the woman in the genital parts. And the scourge ceased from the children of Israel:

9And there were slain four and twenty thousand men.

10And the Lord said to Moses:

11Phinees the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned away my wrath from the children of Israel: because he was moved with my zeal against them, that I myself might not destroy the children of Israel in my zeal.

12Therefore say to him: Behold I give him the peace of my covenant,

13And the covenant of the priesthood for ever shall be both to him and his seed, because he hath been zealous for his God, and hath made atonement for the wickedness of the children of Israel.

14And the name of the Israelite, was slain with the woman of Madian, was Zambri the son of Salu, a prince the kindred and tribe of Simeon.

15And the Madianite woman, that was slain with him, was called Cozbi the daughter of Sur, a most noble prince among the Madianites.

16And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

17Let the Madianites find you enemies, and slay you them:

18Because they also have acted like enemies against you, and have guilefully deceived you by the idol Phogor, and Cozbi their sister, a daughter of a prince of Madian, who was slain in the day the plague for the sacrilege of Phogor.
