1Yahweh parla à Moïse et à Eléazar, fils d’Aaron, le prêtre, en disant :

2« Faites le compte de toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël depuis l’âge de vingt ans et au-dessus, selon leurs maisons patriarcales, de tous les hommes d’Israël en état de porter les armes. »

3Moïse et le prêtre Eléazar leur parlèrent donc dans les plaines de Moab, près du Jourdain, vis-à-vis de Jéricho, en disant :

4« Vous ferez le recensement du peuple depuis l’âge de vingt ans et au-dessus, comme Yahweh l’a ordonné à Moïse et aux enfants d’Israël, à leur sortie du pays d’Égypte. »

5Ruben, premier-né d’Israël. Fils de Ruben : de Hénoch, la famille des Hénochites ; de Phallu, la famille des Phalluites ;

6de Hesron, la famille des Hesronites ; de Charmi, la famille des Charmites.

7Telles sont les familles des Rubénites ; leurs recensés furent quarante-trois mille sept cent trente. —

8Fils de Phallu, Eliab. —

9Fils d’Eliab : Namuel, Dathan et Abiron. C’est ce Dathan et cet Abiron, membres du conseil, qui se soulevèrent contre Moïse et Aaron, dans la troupe de Coré, lorsqu’elle se souleva contre Yahweh.

10La terre, ouvrant sa bouche, les engloutit avec Coré, quand la troupe périt, et que le feu consuma les deux cent cinquante hommes : ils servirent d’exemple.

11Mais les fils de Coré ne moururent pas.

12Fils de Siméon, selon leurs familles : de Namuel, la famille des Namuélites ; de Jamin, la famille des Jaminites ; de Jachin, la famille des Jachinites ;

13de Zaré la famille des Zaréites ; de Saül, la famille des Saülites.

14Telles sont les familles des Siméonites : vingt-deux mille deux cents.

15Fils de Gad, selon leurs familles : de Séphon, la famille des Séphonites ; d’Aggi, la famille des Aggites ; de Sunit, la famille des Sunites ;

16d’Ozni, la famille des Oznites ; de Her, la famille des Hérites ;

17d’Arod, la famille des Arodites ; d’Ariel, la famille des Ariélites.

18Telles sont les familles des fils de Gad, selon leurs recensés : quarante mille cinq cents.

19Fils de Juda : Her et Onan ; mais Her et Onan moururent au pays de Chanaan.

20Voici les fils de Juda selon leurs familles : de Séla, la famille des Sélaïtes ; de Pharès, la famille des Pharésites ; de Zaré, la famille des Zaréites. —

21Les fils de Pharès furent : de Hesron, la famille des Hesronites ; de Hamul, la famille des Hamulites. —

22Telles sont les familles de Juda, selon leurs recensés : soixante-seize mille cinq cents.

23Fils d’Issachar selon leurs familles : de Thola, la famille des Tholaïtes ; de Phua, la famille des Phuaïtes ;

24de Jasub, la famille des Jasubites ; de Semran, la famille des Semranites.

25Telles sont les familles d’Issachar, selon leurs recensés : soixante-quatre mille trois cents.

26Fils de Zabulon selon leurs familles : de Sared, la famille des Sarédites ; d’Elon, la famille des Elonites ; de Jalel, la famille des Jalélites.

28Fils de Joseph selon leurs familles : Manassé et Ephraïm.

29Fils de Manassé : de Machir, la famille des Machirites. — Machir engendra Galaad ; de Galaad, la famille des Galaadites. —

30Voici les fils de Galaad : Jézer, d’où la famille des Jézérites ; de Hélec, la famille des Hélicites ;

31Asriel, d’où la famille des Asriélites ; Séchem, d’où la famille des Séchémites ;

32Sémida, d’où la famille de Sémidaïtes ; Hépher, d’où la famille des Héphrites.

33Salphaad, fils d’Hépher, n’eut point de fils, mais il eut des filles. Voici les noms des filles de Salphaad : Maala, Noa, Hégla, Melcha et Thersa. —

34Telles sont les familles de Manassé ; leurs recensés furent cinquante-deux mille sept cents.

35Voici les fils d’Ephraïm selon leurs familles : de Suthala, la famille des Suthalaïtes ; de Bécher, la famille des Béchrites ; de Théhen, la famille des Théhénites. —

36Voici les fils de Suthala : d’Héran, la famille des Héranites. —

37Telles sont les familles des fils d’Ephraïm, selon leurs recensés : trente-deux mille cinq cents.

38Fils de Benjamin, selon leurs familles : de Béla, la famille des Bélaïtes ; d’Asbel, la famille des Asbélites ; d’Ahiram, la famille des Ahiramites ;

40Les fils de Béla furent Héred et Noéman ; de Héred, la famille des Hérédites ; de Noéman, la famille des Noémanites. —

41Tels sont les fils de Benjamin, selon leurs familles, et leurs recensés furent quarante-cinq mille six cents.

42Voici les fils de Dan, selon leurs familles : de Suham descend la famille des Suhamites. Telles sont les familles de Dan, selon leurs familles.

43Total des familles des Suhamites, selon leurs recensés : soixante-quatre mille quatre cents.

44Fils d’Aser, selon leurs familles : de Jemna, la famille des Jemnites ; de Jessui, la famille des Jessuites ; de Brié, la famille des Briéïtes. —

45Des fils de Brié : de Héber, la famille des Hébrites ; de Melchiel, la famille des Melchiélites. —

46Le nom de la fille d’Aser était Sara. —

47Telles sont les familles des fils d’Aser, d’après leurs recensés : cinquante-trois mille quatre cents.

48Fils de Nephthali, selon leurs familles : de Jésiel, la famille des Jésiélites ; de Guni, la famille des Gunites ;

49de Jéser, la famille des Jésérites ; de Sellem, la famille des Sélémites.

50Telles sont les familles de Nephthali, selon leurs familles, et leurs recensés furent quarante-cinq mille quatre cents.

51Tels sont les enfants d’Israël qui furent recensés : six cent un mille sept cent trente.

52Yahweh parla à Moïse, en disant :

53« À ceux-ci le pays sera partagé, pour être leur héritage, selon le nombre des noms.

54Aux plus nombreux tu donneras un héritage plus grand, et aux moins nombreux tu donneras un héritage plus petit ; on donnera à chacun son héritage selon ses recensés.

55Seulement le partage du pays aura lieu par le sort. Ils le recevront en partage selon les noms des tribus patriarcales.

56C’est par le sort que l’héritage sera réparti aux plus nombreux comme à ceux qui le sont moins. »

57Voici, selon leurs familles, les Lévites qui furent recensés : de Gerson, la famille des Gersonites ; de Caath, la famille des Caathites ; de Mérari, la famille des Mérarites. —

58Voici les familles de Lévi ; la famille des Lobnites, la famille des Hébronites, la famille des Moholites, la famille des Musites et la famille des Coréïtes. — Caath engendra Amram,

59et le nom de la femme d’Amram était Jochabed, fille de Lévi, que sa mère enfanta à Lévi en Égypte ; elle enfanta à Amram Aaron, Moïse et Marie, leur sœur.

60Il naquit à Aaron : Nadab et Abiu, Eléazar et Ithamar.

61Nadab et Abiu moururent lorsqu’ils apportèrent du feu étranger devant Yahweh. —

62Leurs recensés, tous les mâles depuis l’âge d’un mois et au-dessus, furent vingt-trois mille. Car ils ne furent pas compris dans le recensement des enfants d’Israël, parce qu’ils ne leur fut point assigné d’héritage au milieu des enfants d’Israël.

63Tels sont les hommes recensés par Moïse et Eléazar, le prêtre, qui firent le recensement des enfants d’Israël dans les plaines de Moab, près du Jourdain, vis-à-vis de Jéricho.

64Parmi eux, il n’y avait aucun des enfants d’Israël dont Moïse et Aaron le prêtre avaient fait le recensement dans le désert de Sinaï ;

65car Yahweh avait dit d’eux : « Ils mourront dans le désert » ; et il n’en resta pas un, excepté Caleb, fils de Jéphoné, et Josué, fils de Nun.

2Numerate omnem summam filiorum Israël a viginti annis et supra, per domos et cognationes suas, cunctos qui possunt ad bella procedere.

3Locuti sunt itaque Moyses et Eleazar sacerdos, in campestribus Moab super Jordanem contra Jericho, ad eos qui erant

4a viginti annis et supra, sicut Dominus imperaverat, quorum iste est numerus.

10et aperiens terra os suum devoravit Core, morientibus plurimis, quando combussit ignis ducentos quinquaginta viros. Et factum est grande miraculum,

11ut, Core pereunte, filii illius non perirent.

52Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens:

53Istis dividetur terra juxta numerum vocabulorum in possessiones suas.

54Pluribus majorem partem dabis, et paucioribus minorem: singulis, sicut nunc recensiti sunt, tradetur possessio:

55ita dumtaxat ut sors terram tribubus dividat et familiis.

56Quidquid sorte contigerit, hoc vel plures accipiant, vel pauciores.

57Hic quoque est numerus filiorum Levi per familias suas: Gerson, a quo familia Gersonitarum: Caath, a quo familia Caathitarum: Merari, a quo familia Meraritarum.

63Hic est numerus filiorum Israël, qui descripti sunt a Moyse et Eleazaro sacerdote, in campestribus Moab supra Jordanem contra Jericho:

64inter quos, nullus fuit eorum qui ante numerati sunt a Moyse et Aaron in deserto Sinai:

65prædixerat enim Dominus quod omnes morerentur in solitudine. Nullusque remansit ex eis, nisi Caleb filius Jephone, et Josue filius Nun.

1After the blood of the guilty was shed, the Lord said to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron, the priest:

2Number the whole sum of the children of Israel from twenty years old and upward, by their houses and kindreds, all that are able to go forth to war.

3Moses therefore and Eleazar the priest, being in the plains of Moab upon the Jordan over against Jericho, spoke to them that were

4From twenty years old and upward, as the Lord had commanded: and this is the number of them:

5Ruben the firstborn of Israel. His sons were Henoch, of whom is the family of the Henochites: and Phallu, of whom is the family of the Phalluites:

6And Hesron, of whom is the family of the Hesronites: and Charmi, of whom is the family of the Charmites.

7These are the families of the stock of Ruben: whose number was found to be forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty.

8The son of Phallu was Eliab.

9His sons, were Namuel and Dathan and Abiron. These are Dathan and Abiron the princes of the people, that rose against Moses and Aaron in the sedition of Core, when they rebelled against the Lord:

10And the earth opening her mouth swallowed up Core, many others dying, when the fire burned two hundred and fifty men. And there was a great miracle wrought,

11That when Core perished, his sons did not perish.

12The sons of Simeon by their kindreds: Namuel, of him is the family of the Namuelites: Jamin, of him is the family of the Jaminites: Jachin, of him is the family of the Jachinites:

13Zare, of him is the family of the Zarites: Saul, of him is the family of the Saulites.

14These are the families of the stock of Simeon, of which the whole number was twenty-two thousand two hundred.

15The sons of Gad by their kindreds: Sephon, of hin; Is the family of the Sephonites: Aggi, of him is the family of the Aggites: Suni, of him is the family of the Sunites:

23The sons of Issachar, by their kindreds: Thola, of whom is the family of the Tholaites: Phua, of whom is the family of the Phuaites:

24Jasub, of whom is the family of the Jasubites: Semran, of whom is the family of the Semranites.

25These are the kindreds of Issachar, whose number was sixty-four thousand three hundred.

26The sons of Zabulon by their kindreds: Sared, of whom is the family of the Saredites: Elon, of whom is the family of the Elonites: Jalel, of whom is the family of the Jalelites.

27These are the kindreds of Zabulon, whose number was sixty thousand five hundred.

28The sons of Joseph by their kindred, Manasses and Ephraim.

29Of Manasses was born Machir, of whom is the family of the Machirites. Machir beget Galaad, of whom is the family of the Galaadites.

30Galaad had sons: Jezer, of whom is the family of the Jezerites: and Helec, of whom is the family of the Helecites:

31And Asriel, of whom is the family of the Asrielites: and Sechem, of whom is the family of the Sechemites:

32And Semida, of whom is the family of the Semidaites: and Hepher, of whom is the family of the Hepherites.

33And Hepher was the father of Salphaad, who had no sons, but only daughters, whose names are these: Maala, and Noa, and Hegla, and Melcha, and Thersa.

34These are the families of Manasses, and the number of them fifty-two thousand seven hundred.

35And the sons of Ephraim by their kindreds were these: Suthala, of whom is the family of the Suthalaites: Becher, of whom is the family of the Becherites: Thehen, of whom is the family of the Thehenites.

36Now the son of Suthala was Heran, of whom is the family of the Heranites.

37These are the kindreds of the sons of Ephraim: whose number was thirty-two thousand five hundred.

38These are the sons of Joseph by their families. The sons of Benjamin in their kindreds: Bela, of whom is the family of the Belaites: Asbel, of whom is the family of the Asbelites: Ahiram, of whom is the family of the Ahiramites:

39Supham, of whom is the family of the Suphamites: Hupham, of whom is the family of the Huphamites.

42The sons of Dan by their kindreds: Suham, of whom is the family of the Suhamites: These are the kindreds of Dan by their families.

43All were Suhamites, whose number was sixty-four thousand four hundred.

44The sons of Aser by their kindreds: Jemna, of whom is the family of the Jemnaites: Jessui, of whom is the family of the Jessuites: Brie, of whom is the family of the Brieites.

45The sons of Brie: Heber, of whom is the family of the Heberites: and Melchiel, of whom is the family of the Melchielites.

46And the name of the daughter of Aser, was Sara.

47These are the kindreds of the sons of Aser, and their number fifty-three thousand four hundred.

48The sons of Nephtali by their kindreds: Jesiel, of whom is the family of the Jesielites: Guni, of whom is the family of the Gunites:

49Jeser, of whom is the family of the Jeserites: Sellem, of whom is the family of the Sellemites.

50These are the kindreds of the sons of Nephtali by their families: whose number was forty-five thousand four hundred.

51This is the sum of the children of Israel, that were reckoned up, six hundred and one thousand seven hundred and thirty.

52And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

53To these shall the land be divided for their possessions according to the number of names.

54To the greater number thou shalt give a greater portion, and to the fewer a less: to every one, as they have now been reckoned up, shall a possession be delivered:

55Yet so that by lot the land be divided to the tribe and families.

56Whatsoever shall fall by lot, that shall be taken by the more, or the fewer.

57This also is the number of the sons of Levi by their families: Gerson, of whom is the family of the Gersonites: Caath, of whom is the family of the Caathites: Merari, of whom is the family of the Merarites.

58These are the families of Levi: The family of Lobni, the family of Hebroni, the family of Moholi, the family of Musi, the family of Core. Now Caath beget Amram:

59Who had to wife Jochabed the daughter of Levi, who was horn to him in Egypt. She bore to her husband Amram sons, Aaron and Moses, and Mary their sister.

60Of Aaron were born Nadab and Abiu, and Eleazar and Ithamar:

61Of whom Nadab and Abiu died, when they had offered the strange fire before the Lord.

62And all that were numbered, were twenty-three thousand males from one month old and upward: for they were not reckoned up among the children of Israel, neither was a possession given to them with the rest.

63This is the number of the children of Israel, that were enrolled by Moses and Eleazar the priest, in the plains of Moab upon the Jordan, over against Jericho.

64Among whom there was not one of them that were numbered before by Moses and Aaron in the desert of Sinai.

65For the Lord had foretold that they should die in the wilderness. And none remained of them, but Caleb the son of Jephone, and Josue the son of Nun.
