Side-by-side reading
1 Peter 5
Douay-Rheims 1899
About this edition1The ancients therefore that are among you, I beseech, who am myself also an ancient, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ: as also a partaker of that glory which is to be revealed in time to come:
2Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking care of it, not by constraint, but willingly, according to God: not for filthy lucre’s sake, but voluntarily:
3Neither as lording it over the clergy, but being made a pattern of the flock from the heart.
4And when the prince of pastors shall appear, you shall receive a never fading crown of glory.
5In like manner, ye young men, be subject to the ancients. And do you all insinuate humility one to another, for God resisteth the proud, but to the humble he giveth grace.
6Be you humbled therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in the time of visitation:
7Casting all your care upon him, for he hath care of you.
8Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour.
9Whom resist ye, strong in faith: knowing that the same affliction befalls your brethren who are in the world.
10But the God of all grace, who hath called us into his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little, will himself perfect you, and confirm you, and establish you.
11To him be glory and empire for ever and ever. Amen.
12By Sylvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I think, I have written briefly: beseeching and testifying that this is the true grace of God, wherein you stand.
13The church that is in Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you: and so doth my son Mark.
14Salute one another with a holy kiss. Grace be to all you, who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.
Clementine Vulgate 1598
5Similiter adolescentes subditi estote senioribus. Omnes autem invicem humilitatem insinuate, quia Deus superbis resistit, humilibus autem dat gratiam.
6Humiliamini igitur sub potenti manu Dei, ut vos exaltet in tempore visitationis:
7omnem sollicitudinem vestram projicientes in eum, quoniam ipsi cura est de vobis.
8Sobrii estote, et vigilate: quia adversarius vester diabolus tamquam leo rugiens circuit, quærens quem devoret:
9cui resistite fortes in fide: scientes eamdem passionem ei quæ in mundo est vestræ fraternitati fieri.
10Deus autem omnis gratiæ, qui vocavit nos in æternam suam gloriam in Christo Jesu, modicum passos ipse perficiet, confirmabit, solidabitque.
11Ipsi gloria, et imperium in sæcula sæculorum. Amen.
14Salutate invicem in osculo sancto. Gratia vobis omnibus qui estis in Christo Jesu. Amen.

About this edition1Therefore, I beg the elders who are among you, as one who is also an elder and a witness of the Passion of Christ, who also shares in that glory which is to be revealed in the future:
2pasture the flock of God that is among you, providing for it, not as a requirement, but willingly, in accord with God, and not for the sake of tainted profit, but freely,
3not so as to dominate by means of the clerical state, but so as to be formed into a flock from the heart.
4And when the Leader of pastors will have appeared, you shall secure an unfading crown of glory.
5Similarly, young persons, be subject to the elders. And infuse all humility among one another, for God resists the arrogant, but to the humble he gives grace.
6And so, be humbled under the powerful hand of God, so that he may exalt you in the time of visitation.
7Cast all your cares upon him, for he takes care of you.
8Be sober and vigilant. For your adversary, the devil, is like a roaring lion, traveling around and seeking those whom he might devour.
9Resist him by being strong in faith, being aware that the same passions afflict those who are your brothers in the world.
10But the God of all grace, who has called us to his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will himself perfect, confirm, and establish us, after a brief time of suffering.
11To him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
12I have written briefly, through Sylvanus, whom I consider to be a faithful brother to you, begging and testifying that this is the true grace of God, in which you have been established.
13The Church which is in Babylon, elect together with you, greets you, as does my son, Mark.
14Greet one another with a holy kiss. Grace be to all of you who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.
