Side-by-side reading
1 Peter 1
Douay-Rheims 1899
About this edition1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers dispersed through Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, elect,
2According to the foreknowledge of God the Father, unto the sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you and peace be multiplied.
3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy hath regenerated us unto a lively hope, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4Unto an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that can not fade, reserved in heaven for you,
5Who, by the power of God, are kept by faith unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time.
6Wherein you shall greatly rejoice, if now you must be for a little time made sorrowful in divers temptations:
7That the trial of your faith (much more precious than gold which is tried by the fire) may be found unto praise and glory and honour at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
8Whom having not seen, you love: in whom also now, though you see him not, you believe: and believing shall rejoice with joy unspeakable and glorified;
9Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
10Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and diligently searched, who prophesied of the grace to come in you.
11Searching what or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ in them did signify: when it foretold those sufferings that are in Christ, and the glories that should follow:
12To whom it was revealed, that not to themselves, but to you they ministered those things which are now declared to you by them that have preached the gospel to you, the Holy Ghost being sent down from heaven, on whom the angels desire to look.
13Wherefore having the loins of your mind girt up, being sober, trust perfectly in the grace which is offered you in the revelation of Jesus Christ,
14As children of obedience, not fashioned according to the former desires of your ignorance:
15But according to him that hath called you, who is holy, be you also in all manner of conversation holy:
16Because it is written: You shall be holy, for I am holy.
17And if you invoke as Father him who, without respect of persons, judgeth according to every one’s work: converse in fear during the time of your sojourning here.
18Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things as gold or silver, from your vain conversation of the tradition of your fathers:
19But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb unspotted and undefiled,
20Foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world, but manifested in the last times for you,
21Who through him are faithful in God, who raised him up from the dead, and hath given him glory, that your faith and hope might be in God.
22Purifying your souls in the obedience of charity, with a brotherly love, from a sincere heart love one another earnestly:
23Being born again not of corruptible seed, but incorruptible, by the word of God who liveth and remaineth for ever.
24For all flesh is as grass; and all the glory thereof as the flower of grass. The grass is withered, and the flower thereof is fallen away.
25But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel hath been preached unto you.
Clementine Vulgate 1598
About this edition1Petrus Apostolus Jesu Christi, electis advenis dispersionis Ponti, Galatiæ, Cappadociæ, Asiæ, et Bithyniæ,

About this edition1Peter, Apostle of Jesus Christ, to the newly-arrived elect of the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
2in accord with the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, with the obedience and the sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: May grace and peace be multiplied for you.
3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy has regenerated us into a living hope, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead:
4unto an incorruptible and undefiled and unfading inheritance, which is reserved for you in heaven.
5By the power of God, you are guarded through faith for a salvation which is ready to be revealed in the end time.
6In this, you should exult, if now, for a brief time, it is necessary to be made sorrowful by various trials,
7so that the testing of your faith, which is much more precious than gold tested by fire, may be found in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
8For though you have not seen him, you love him. In him also, though you do not see him, you now believe. And in believing, you shall exult with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
9returning with the goal of your faith, the salvation of souls.
10About this salvation, the prophets inquired and diligently searched, those who prophesied about the future grace in you,
11inquiring as to what type of condition was signified to them by the Spirit of Christ, when foretelling those sufferings that are in Christ, as well as the subsequent glories.
12To them, it was revealed that they were ministering, not for themselves, but for you those things which have now been announced to you through those who have preached the Gospel to you, through the Holy Spirit, who was sent down from heaven to the One upon whom the Angels desire to gaze.
13For this reason, gird the waist of your mind, be sober, and hope perfectly in the grace that is offered to you in the revelation of Jesus Christ.
14Be like sons of obedience, not conforming to the desires of your former ignorance,
15but in accord with him who has called you: the Holy One. And in every behavior, you yourself must be holy,
16for it is written: “You shall be holy, for I am Holy.”
17And if you invoke as Father him who, without showing favoritism to persons, judges according to each one’s work, then act in fear during the time of your sojourning here.
18For you know that it was not with corruptible gold or silver that you were redeemed away from your useless behavior in the traditions of your fathers,
19but it was with the precious blood of Christ, an immaculate and undefiled lamb,
20foreknown, certainly, before the foundation of the world, and made manifest in these latter times for your sake.
21Through him, you have been faithful to God, who raised him up from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope would be in God.
22So chastise your souls with the obedience of charity, in fraternal love, and love one another from a simple heart, attentively.
23For you have been born again, not from corruptible seed, but from what is incorruptible, from the Word of God, living and remaining for all eternity.
24For all flesh is like the grass and all its glory is like the flower of the grass. The grass withers and its flower falls away.
25But the Word of the Lord endures for eternity. And this is the Word that has been evangelized to you.
